My first 10K!!! It was absolutely the perfect day for it and the perfect race. It's considered the fastest 10K in Colorado; and the day dawned slightly cloudy with not a stitch of breeze. Perfect! I woke up and got ready as usual for a run, and right as I was about to head out the door I thought I would throw up from nerves. ha! I stretched at home and then headed to the race. I did a little warm up jogging and stretched more. With about 10 minutes before the race, I ate 2 BLOKS. The race started at 7:00 and I chose to place myself very close to the end of the pack. It was actually awe inspiring when we started and I saw how many people there were running. It's a strange but very palpable camaraderie. I took my first mile at a comfortable, but not slow pace. And then after mile 1, I kept telling myself, "It's a 10k, Laura, it's supposed to hurt! Give it your all!" My pace started slacking when that mental pep talk stopped. I'm glad that I positioned myself at the back because it was mentally more encouraging to be passing people all through the race, rather than being passed the whole time. I felt like I paced myself well and pushed hard as well. I'm glad I took my Garmin so I could see when I was running slower than 10:00 and consciously crank it up a notch. So, here are my splits:

1 - 10:15

2 - 9:41

3 - 9:32

4 - 9:49

5 - 9:38

6 - 9:33

.2 - 7:46 ave pace

Total time: 1:00:41 (ave pace 9:47)

I am SO bummed!! I'm a stupid 40 seconds off my goal time. I really wanted to get under an hour. But I didn't do the math right - I thought keeping it a little under 10:00 pace would get me there. But it's actually under a 9:40 pace. A stupid 7 seconds a mile faster than what I ran. I really feel like I could've done that. Aaaaarrrgh!

Learning how to run and beginning to race has been such an interesting experience over the last year. I was never a runner before - never even did sports in high school. So, the idea and ability to "give me all" is still somewhat foreign. I know that my last .3 miles, I was about to die; but the 6 miles before that I was pushing, yet still surprisingly comfortable. I don't know if that's because I wasn't pushing hard enough or if I just found my running "zone." Well, ... there will be many more races in the future; and I hope that by continuing to run and race I will be able to gauge myself, my limits, and my capabilities better. All in time, I guess.

Woo, congratulations!! Great run. So pushing yourself past pain feels good?!? It's a self control thing I guess. I am glad you felt good though. Sounds like you are recovering nicely. Good deal!!!

Congratulations on a great job for your first 10K! Even with a Garmin, it is hard to accurately determine how fast you will be able to run when you have never run the distance before. The Garmin helps with your splits and with the pace, but some of it is mental, some of it is physical. You have put up a great time, and now you have something to improve on the next time you run a 10K.

Great job! I am so proud of you! This is a great time for your first ever 10K! Does it make you hungry? Wanna try again? You will likely never go over an hour in a 10K again, so I hope you enjoyed it!

Was this race chip timed? I'm looking at your first mile thinking that it doesn't seem quite right. You were so steady through the rest of the race. Was the 1st mile uphill? Were you nice and warmed up at the start of the race? Was there a lot of crowding in the first mile?

You did awesome! That is a fantastic time for your first 10K! The learning how to race comes with time and lots of practice, I always learn something new every race. CONGRATS!!

Very good job Laura! I can feel your enthusiasm for the NEXT one! Let me tell you something that I really liked for my 10K last week. Tom had entered the course in on the course tool so we were able to analyze it for different finishing times. The thing I really like is that it takes elevation into consideration. It gives you the paces you need for each mile. It really helped me on this one. I think it's better to know that on the uphill I can have a slower pace than on the downhill. Trying to keep a steady pace through out is sometimes kind of discouraging when you are killing yourself on an uphill and holding back on a downhill. Anyway, you ought to check it out. It's pretty cool! Again...Great job!

Wow Laura! Awesome job! I think you did amazingly awesome and you really were so close to your goal! It is incredible. You know the funny thing about racing is that I'm sure if you asked anybody if they "gave their all" and if they tried to be totally honest they would probably say they could have done better. It is so easy to look back and criticize yourself and say you could have done better, when the truth is it is too late to find out. I guess that is what keeps pushing us. No matter how hard we ran, we always think we could have done more. So don't feel too bad. It is the runner's curse. It's the only think that keeps us going, though it doesn't necessarily keep us sane :P

Thank you sooooo much, everyone!!

Yes, Lybi, I think I should've taken the first 1st mile faster. I didn't trust my warm-up, so I was overly conservative on my beginning mile.

Kim, what course tool do you use? That sounds really cool!!!

Kristina, it's good to know that it's typical for all runners to be critical of every race. That's actually comforting. ; ) Thanks.

It's the course tool right here on our very own blog! You have to be logged in to use it. When you log in you will see it as an option on the side. I haven't had to work with it on my own because Tom has it figured out for me. But he said it's very easy to use. Here in Utah it's great because maybe someone else will put in the race course for you, but you might have to figure it out and put your own courses in. It's worth checking into...it's free!

Sorry I'm a week late commenting on your race (first time I've checked the blog all week!) I think you did WONDERFUL! You sound like you were prepared, mentally strong, passed lots of people and had fun! You had a great strategy too. I totally know how you feel about mis-timing (like when I wanted to break 4:00 at SGM and came in at 4:00- I felt like I definately could have done it with better pacing- ah well..) but those little miscalculations are easy to make and takes time to work out the kinks. Your first 10k with under 10 min. miles- that is REALLY REALLY GREAT!! CONGRATS!
