Okay, this may be premature, but I need some accountability to keep me motivated. I just had a baby in April and haven't been able to exercise in months, so I'm starting very slow. Well, I say that, but I actually walked 1 1/2 hours last Friday and was sore for 3 days. So, I'm trying again. This morning, I only went 2 miles (instead of 4) and stopped to talk to a friend who was driving home from her workout at a gym.

I've never been a runner. I have 4 (of 6) siblings who have raced compeetitively either in High School or as an adult, but I have never followed their lead until now. My sister, Lybi, is already on this blog (Confessions of a Piano Teacher) and I love reading her funny commentaries. I'm not nearly as funny or as competitive as Lybi, but I do want to get out there and start running.

Welcome to the blog! Way to get started and get out there!

From Laura on Wed, Aug 22, 2007 at 22:37:13

Thanks, Brent and Michelle! It's amazing to be starting so slow and pathetic and already have a support team. It's so helpful to see that great runners have bad days. Not being a great runner myself, I've always assumed that marathoners felt great all the time. It's so encouraging to read everyone's daily ups and downs. Thanks again!

From Hubby (Mike) on Wed, Aug 22, 2007 at 23:24:22

That's my wife! Isn't she great?

Running is contagious, as evidenced by the success of this blog, eh? Well, it's rubbing off on me. I'm an avid road biker, but just today I went out and got a new pair of running shoes...

Laura, I'm so excited for you! I'm right behind you kiddo...alright, I'm way behind you. ;-)

From Sasha Pachev on Wed, Aug 22, 2007 at 23:33:21

Laura - welcome to the blog. Marathoners do not feel great all the time,in fact, sometimes they feel not particularly great up to 80% of the time, then they taper, feel great on race day, recover, up the mileage, and back into "the zone".

From Lybi on Wed, Aug 22, 2007 at 23:43:21

Yea! What a woman. Please notice, everyone, that she has 2 kids less than a year apart (and less than 18 months old), and she is still finding time to do this. All my excuses just don't compare. Great job, you cutie!

Woohoo! One more recruit from Lybi's clan! Don't worry about how fast or slow you run or walk - there are all sorts on this blog - bikers, walkers, woggers, joggers, and runners. Then there's folks like Sasha, Paul and the others who are elite, winning races from the 5K up to the marathon. Both Lybi and I love this blog, and I especially love reading Lybi's blogs and comments.

From sarah on Fri, Aug 24, 2007 at 16:39:51

Welcome Laura....If you are related to Lybi I'm sure I'll just love you too. She is the cutest kid (all grown up that is)..we keep dreaming of moving next door to each other. I got a kick out of your goal to run a half marathon without embarrassment....Running for a long time can bring out certain needs that can put you in compromising situations...like no portapotty nearby and other situations...but just as long as you keep your sense of humor you'll be fine.

From Sasha Pachev on Fri, Aug 24, 2007 at 16:42:58

Especially if you are a female running a 2:17 marathon in London. You get the honor of having your trip to the woods covered on BBC!

On BBC!!?!??! Oh, how mortifying! Luckily I'll never be impressive enough to be on BBC for my running ability - or my potty breaks!

Thanks for all the great advice on running and the training tips, Sasha! I'm going to learn a ton just gleaning from all you wonderful runners! I'm excited!

I didn't get out yesterday because my husband went cycling instead. But I was tired ALL day long yesterday. So this morning, even though I went to bed at midnight and was awake a few times with babies, I knew I had to get out. Beautiful morning! It rained last night, so it was humid and quite cool at 6:15 (55 degrees - and it's still August!). I ran a little on the downhills just to keep my heart rate up. My neighborhood is very hilly, so it makes for an interesting walk/run. I try to stretch after my run instead of before (which I have always done before) from reading the advice of others on this website. I didn't think I'd be able to run without stretching first, but starting slow and then stretching afterwards feels good. I'm feeling great now, but I'm gonna need a NAP today!

I don't know about the running after the night shift it's kinda crazy! But in a way I think that I think about the energy less and my body kinda takes over. I think it's my mind that sometimes limits my running telling me that I'm tired, hurt ect. if that makes sense. So sometimes my after work runs are some of my best! (Weird) Did you get your CNA after your daugter was born with CP? I was in nursing school when our second daughter was born with spina bifida. Funny how things happen I sure have been glad to have my medical back ground over the years raising her! And it makes me more motivated to run and exercise because I think a lot of times we take our bodies for granted. When there are so many people that are limited by there bodies and then those that are not and are not using them to the full potential, or abusing them by not using them at all, when they are more than capable. :) :)

From Sasha Pachev on Fri, Aug 24, 2007 at 12:38:03

There are two different types of energy - the muscle energy, and the neural energy. They do not always correlate, in fact, half the time they do not. The muscle energy gets drained from running, while the neural energy usually either does not change, or actually increases if you run easy. When you do not feel like running, it is usually the neural energy that is lacking, you should always go and give it a shot. See the Top Ten Training Mistakes (link above).

From Lybi on Fri, Aug 24, 2007 at 16:01:51

Hey, what a sweet comment, Michelle. You are right, we should all make the best use of everything we've been given. Laura, I'm so proud of you for getting out there. Remember, every little bit helps, so even if you don't have time or energy for a big ol' trip, just do as much as you can and call it good.

Woo-hooo! Hey, I just thought of something...you really ought to invest in bear repellent (pepper spray) or something. Lots of people on this blog encounter wildlife on their runs. Snack-sized people like you have to be extra careful. :)

From laura on Sun, Aug 26, 2007 at 00:50:29

That's so funny! On my very first walk (when I over-did it!), I was walking on the Santa Fe trail which is gorgeous, but I didn't have a dog or a walking partner, so every now and then (when no one was closeby) I tried clapping loudly so I wouldn't happen upon a mother bear and her cubs, etc. I kept laughing about how stupid I must look, though. And I remembered from Parent Trap the "mountain lion repellent" -- hitting two sticks together. Ha!

Beautiful morning. I went walking on a different route and tried to run as much as possible (which is not much since I'm still just starting). Last Saturday, I was looking at the races in this area and I've chosen my first race: there's a 5K in 4 weeks that I would like to compete in and use that time as a benchmark. It's so interesting to have a goal! Instead of just running for an ambiguous "be healthy" goal; knowing that I need to be able to run a 5k in a few weeks makes me MUCH more motivated to get out the door and really train. I'm excited! This will be my first time to compete - EVER (in a sport - I've done musical competitions before).

Awesome Laura! I think it's a GREAT idea to run a 5K so soon. That way, you can see progress as you continue to race. Also, lots of people do 5Ks and walk the whole time, so don't worry, you'll be in much better shape by then than lots of people. I'm so excited for you!!!

Good for you, that will be fun and you'll really see some amazing progress! Not to mention the motivation to get out the door sky rocket!!!

As for my daughter, she is 14, just started high school, She has a variety of medical problems but walks with a little bit of a limp? (I'm not sure if thats the best way to describe, but altered gait.) The hard thing for her is that everything on the outside except for the gait is normal and so sometimes the world isn't too understanding. But she's a tough little nut and handles things really well, inspite of all the additional challenges she has!!!

My hip has been really hurting after my last run. It's actually been hurting since I first starting exercising 2 weeks ago, but it got much worse when I started running more. I called my brother-in-law, James, and he recommended to take it easy, get good shoes, and go to the chiropractor. So, I went on the elliptical this morning for half an hour (thus, I estimated about a mile's worth of running). My hip is feeling better today. I have an appt on Friday for a chiropractic adjustment; it actually makes sense that my hip is out of alignment. All during my last trimester, I had to go to the chiropractor all the time because my tailbone and low back were causing me major problems. I don't want to chicken out on my 5K race, but I also don't want to get an injury that will make it impossible to run at all. Ugh.

Comments
From Lybi on Wed, Aug 29, 2007 at 21:46:02

Sorry about your hip! Heber and I both have had similar issues. I notice it most after a fast run--usually the morning after. Gluteus medius may be the culprit, at least for me. Heber gave me some exercises to work on. Don't tell him but I never did them. (Are you there, Heber?) Usually, I just try to run slower until it goes away. The importance of running slowly when you first start can not be overstated! Run slow! Running downhill is also harder on bones, joints, & ligagments than running uphill.

Geez, 30 min. on the elliptical is way more than 1 mile. At least 2, maybe even 2.5. Keep up the good work and don't overdo it! : ) Love ya, sis.

P.s. Today is Nathan's b-day!

From Michelle on Wed, Aug 29, 2007 at 23:11:16

Sorry to hear about the hip, I have a chronic hip pain that I'm 99% sure is bursitis. But I'd love to hear how or what the chiropractor has to day about yours. Where does it seem to bother you? I used to ice mine a lot, but it seems to be that heat helps more. Weird I know but what ever works is good for me.

From laura on Thu, Aug 30, 2007 at 21:24:58

Thanks for the sympathy, Libby and Michelle!! I didn't know you (Lybi) and Heber both had a hip problem. I don't think running slower will help the hip on its own because I wasn't even running for the first week and it was hurting. It doesn't hurt while I run/walk, but it hurts later on in the day. When I get up from sitting down or laying down, then I feel like I'm going to falll because it's so intense. But after a few steps, it relaxes. Weird, huh?

And I'm amazed that you run so well, Michelle, considering chronic hip pain!!!! That's dedication!

From ebeth on Thu, Aug 30, 2007 at 23:13:08

Welcome to the blog. I had a very similar hip problem a few weeks ago. I found out that walking fast on it was worse than a very slow jog. Maybe I was trying to walk with too long a stride. Still hurts occasionally but much less.

The elliptical again - half an hour with varying levels of resistance. This is helping with my hip, but I wish I could get outside and run instead. The week is almost over and I had hoped to be able to run half a mile without walking by the end of my first week of training. Ugh. The best laid plans. . .

Good job, Laura. If you can do that darn elliptical thingy for at least 7 min. without stopping, that is probably the equivalent of running half a mile without stopping. YOU...ARE...AWESOME!

Well, I finally bought real running shoes yesterday and I also went to the chiropractor. He actually gasped a little and said, "No wonder you've been in pain." When laying on my stomach, my feet were a full inch different in length. I also tried something this morning that a friend told me about; it's called Ceragem and it's a therapeutic massage table that utilizes jade rolling stones that emit far infrared heat. So, you go to the store and they have 20 of these tables that people can just try for 40 minutes for FREE! You can come back as often as you want - in fact they encourage you to. I guess after using it, people love it so much, they're willing to spend the thousands to buy it. I know two people in my ward that have one (one has it for her Fibromyalsia). The salesperson said it might hurt the first time if my back is not doing great - and it did. But, afterwards, I felt more relaxed than a massage therapist - and I felt . . . elongated. Does that make sense. I felt like I was standing taller. Anyway, it was very interesting. I think I'll try it 2 more times next week and if I don't notice a difference, at least I won't be out any money!!

My walk/jog/run felt good. It was nice to have better shoes that didn't clomp. I tried jogging at a walking pace like Lybi recommends and I was able to do that for about half the time (not all together). I even tried hard to continue jogging UP the hills thanks to Brent's Rools. Thanks for the push, Brent! Hopefully my hip won't be hurting me tomorrow. We'll see . . .

From Lybi on Sat, Sep 01, 2007 at 22:16:21

Hey! I want to be elongated too! So glad you got to the chiro. An inch off! Wow. Hope you feel better soon. Good job jogging today!

From James in Sunny AZ on Sat, Sep 01, 2007 at 22:21:39

Glad you got some good shoes and went to the chiropractor. I suspect you will feel better tomorrow, but do not be surprised if you get out of alignment again quickly - your muscles are used to that position now and need to be trained to keep the proper position. Another thing that can make a big difference - do you always run on the same side of the road? Most roads, and even sidewalks, are cambered a bit to allow the water to run off into the sewer. If you run on one side of the road going out and the other coming back, it is sure to throw your alignment off. If you are running on the road or sidewalk, try running an out-and-back, staying on the same side of the road both ways (recommended by my chiropractor). You guys are also very close to that trail that goes under that bridge - that might be a good place to run as well. Easier on your legs than road or concrete . . . :)

From laura on Sun, Sep 02, 2007 at 17:49:38

Good advice, James! I never even thought of that. I have actually been running mostly on a trail by our house, but I'll try to remember to break up the side of the street that I'm on. What trail goes under a bridge? Do you mean the Santa Fe trail - which is about a mile and a half from our house? Did you run on that one when you were here?

From Brent on Sun, Sep 02, 2007 at 19:39:48

Laura, thanks for your comments. It seems mentally, you are taking all the right steps to move forward for fitness and fun with running. Enjoy the running journey. I look forward to watching your progress. The most fun thing for me, with new runners, is to watch how they progress. No doubt, it would be untimatley cool if you and Lybi ran a marathon together some day. What pictures could be taken and what memories would be made. Stay cool

That table sounds really cool, and I really like FREE!! Too bad that I live in smallville, no chance of finding that around here.... but sounds like things with the chiroparctor went well, actually do have one of those here, never been to one. Right now the hip is doing pretty good but if it doesn't decide to stay that way, might give that a try!!! Sounds like things are coming along good inspite of the inconviences that the body can produce. I read and usually try BS rools on the hills too, it's not always a lot but I do try to speed up. Sometimes it depends on the hill, if they are too long I speed up, slow down, speed up.....ect. I guess we just keep plugging along and trying!!!!

From laura on Tue, Sep 04, 2007 at 09:29:24

Wow, I wish I could say I've never been to a chiropractor. My dumb back gives me lots of trouble. The problem is, I don't think a chiropractor will ever give me long term help, but I don't know what else to do. I agree with you on the hills and the Rools! It depends on how long the incline. And sometimes, I might make it up a hill, but then I have to walk when I finally get there. I doubt that was the purpose of the rools. Ha! Thanks for your support and encouragement!!!!

2.46 miles in 37:52. Whoosh. Slow, but still - I'm improving. My hip hurt with a dull ache during the whole walk/run, and my left knee started hurting the last mile; but my spirits started feeling better after the 2nd mile. If my joints had been feeling better, I think I might've enjoyed going a little longer.

Slow milesFast milesTotal Distance
1.000.001.00

After my run on Monday I could hardly even walk around the house that day and the next, and yesterday wasn't much better. On Wednesday, my daughter's physical therapist said it is probably bursitis. She said it could be from the pregnancy and the readjusting of my joints, or my low back being so far out of alignment while exercising. She recommended anti-inflammatory meds (if approved by the dr.) and the SuperFeet insoles. I think I'll try the insoles and ibuprofen.

I'm going to readjust my training even more - like Lybi had wanted me to from the very beginning (don't you hate it when little sisters are right!?! grrr) So, I'm going to walk/run a mile and keep any running VERY slow 3 days a week. Once I can do this without pain in my hip or knees, then I will keep it at one mile a day for 6 days a week. Then I will slowly increase after that. Considering this schedule, I'm going to shoot for a later 5K race. Instead of Sept 22, I found another one on October 20 and hopefully my body will be ready by then.

Hey Laura- thanks for your comment on my blog! Nice to meet ya! So you're Lybi's big sis and you just had a baby and are training for a 5K? Did I get that right? (How's that for a run on?) Sounds like a great plan! What yrs. were you at BYU? I was on campus '91-'94, but finished up at SLC campus.

From laura on Fri, Sep 07, 2007 at 10:25:54

A water fight, huh, Lybi? You forget this is Colorado - we might have SNOW in October!! But I'll take you as a running partner for any race!! That would be so fun - although I'm sure I would slow you down or cramp your running finesse.

Yes, Christi, you got it right!! I'm Lybi's older sister, but she has me by an inch and a quarter - which she will ALWAYS point out! ;oD When you're as short as we are, every inch counts. I was at BYU '93-96, so we overlapped a little!! What was your major? You're a great runner, by the way! I enjoy reading your blog. Did you run at BYU?

From Christi on Fri, Sep 07, 2007 at 11:07:10

Oh Laura! You are so kind to even SUGGEST that I may have run for BYU! Heck no! I ran a tweeny bit in middle school & high school. But my real running life began after my 2nd child was born. A friend & I used to walk w/ our strollers and that got boring so we decided to jog a little- next thing you knew we were signing up for races- I've been addicted ever since! So how short are you gals? I probably have you beat- 5'1"! (I have 2 sisters both taller than me, I feel your pain) Oh, and my major was Psychology...

From Lybi on Fri, Sep 07, 2007 at 11:16:05

Hey, I'm 5'1" too! Laura's 5--as in 60 inches when she is standing up super straight. The best things come in little packages.

From Kristina on Fri, Sep 07, 2007 at 11:50:54

Yea Laura! I'm glad you are here too! Maybe with you blogging I won't get in so much trouble with Lybi when I don't blog :) Ha ha, just kidding.

Anyway, I know some back aligning exercises that would probably help you. Some of them are hard to explain so I wish I could show you. But a simple one is to lie on you back and pull one knee at a time up to your chest. Then lie flat on your back with your legs straight and stretch your arms up over your head. You could probably do a google search for back exercises and stretches and find a bunch more.

I hope it gets better!

Quite a cold morning - 50 degrees at 9:30. Whoosh! Hello, autumn! The first half was a little sluggish. My feet had a hard time getting off the ground. The last half was much better. I ran in the evening today because of other appointments in the morning. I usually try to go around 9:00 when both my babies are asleep and while my husband is working downstairs; but Wednesdays will have to be PM runs since Cami has her therapies starting at 8:00 and getting all 3 girls ready and out the door by 7:30 is impressively busy, even with Mike's help. Mike's been getting up at 4:30 to go cycling lately (poor tired man!) and it's been in the 40's lately at that hour!

I went a little longer than my one mile per Sasha's suggestion. It was good. Still no pain in my hip or knees, so maybe I'm finally starting to warm up to being active again. I'll keep it slow and steady, though, and look forward to my 5K on October 20th. I asked the 2 marathoners in my book club if they wanted to run it with me, but one will have just run the Long Beach marathon the week before, and the other - St. George. Oh well. I think my husband is going to run it with me, if we can get someone to stay with our girls.

Does anyone else hate 1st grade!?!?! My sweet little 6 year old is struggling with her new Special Ed teacher. I'm going to look into other options because I hate seeing her disliking school more and more; and I'm getting phone calls from the teacher saying, "We're having a power struggle over doing math." Come on! This is special ed! Give her a break and try again in half an hour; don't make life miserable! Ugh.

We homeschool. Kids are kids, so there is a lot of power struggle at times, but we can handle it. We are not doing special ed, so I am not sure how it works with homeschool, but I imagine you can do quite well.

If you have any kind of exercise equipment in the home (elliptical, stationary bike, etc), it would help adding some workouts on it as well to supplement your running, and build endurance/strength without an increased risk of injury.

Ha!! Boy was I surprised to see that comment from my DH..I was just going to say the same thing about school. Can you change teachers if the problem continues...we are unfortunately no help in the schooling department because as Sasha said we homeschool...Good job on doing more miles.

I took the heart rate monitor today to figure out my max heart rate. Right before my steepest hill, I started running and had to convince my legs to keep trudging up the hill. I maxed out at about 194 and my running pace before the hill was 5:24. It's amazing that so many of the bloggers can maintain that pace! At the same time, there is something so liberating about a sprint like that - it's so different from a slow, bumpy jog. I'd love to be able to maintain a sprint for longer than 10 yards. ha, ha!!

That's awesome, Sarah and Sasha, that you homeschool!! What curriculum do you use? My sister-in-law uses Thomas Jefferson Education and has me almost convinced that I need to homeschool my children. I'm not sure that I can homeschool my oldest one with special needs because the school is able to offer so many extra services - therapies and specialists. But yesterday I did schedule her therapies (the ones outside of school) to be in the mornings so she can miss more of 1st grade. I don't know if that's much of a solution, but it gives her more time away from a teacher who doesn't seem to work well with her personality.

One quick question: my hip doesn't hurt while I run or even right after my run. But the first time I sit down for a long time after my run and then stand up, my hip feels AWFUL! I stretch after my run, but are there hip stretches that I should do? or ice it? or ibuprofen? or . . . I don't know! It's aggravating that my hip never seems to totally feel better. Even when I sleep at night, when I lay on my right hip it hurts a little. Any thoughts?

From Jon on Fri, Sep 14, 2007 at 14:20:18

Just wondering, what part of CO are you in?

For the hip, stretches are always good. Hip problems are often caused by muscle problems elsewhere, like quads, hams, or back. Have you had any tightness? Has your stride changed recently (i.e. compensating for an injury)?

From sarah on Fri, Sep 14, 2007 at 16:37:55

We do love homeschooling but it's definitely not for everyone. If you are interested in it there are homeschooling websites with discussion boards that could give you more info. I'm sure there are even moms that homeschool special needs kids. It's hard to balance with housework. I think my house is a little bit less organized than I would like it( not bad at all just not perfect either.

From laura on Sat, Sep 15, 2007 at 22:32:09

Jon, we live in Colorado Springs - in the shadow of Pikes Peak (hence my reference to the Rockies in my blog name - although "running" is a bit of a stretch as I'm just starting out. I never even ran in High school. ha!)

Thanks for the tips on my hip. My low back (especially tailbone) went through a real number with my preganancy (baby is now 5 months), but I've always had low back pain. I'm trying to see the chiropractor on a somewhat regular basis as part of my training. I figure as I strengthen my muscles, I'll be more able to stay in alignment.

From Michelle on Mon, Sep 17, 2007 at 05:07:51

I definatley reccomend that you read the vampire series, they are soooo good! I'm surprised that Lybi hasn't had you read them already?

The massage was really great! You definatley need to have one, I know that new baby, special needs child and mother, wife in general can be a lot it would be a great recharge for you mentally and physically!!!

Hope that the hip starts to feel better, I hate to have someone "Feeling" my pain, but it's nice to have someone to swap ideas and possible solutions with. Check on the internet about stretching the piriformis muscle, that might help along with regular other stretching. also if you have had a lot of low back problems, you know the low back and abdominal go hand in hand (Yes, that means sit-ups and increased core srtength might help).

From Lybi on Mon, Sep 17, 2007 at 16:08:11

Hey Laura, great job! Two things: first, I'm not sure, but I think 194 is a really high heart rate. Might not want to push it so hard. The other thing is I am having similar problems with my hip. It never hurts when I run, but first thing in the morning and when I first get out of a chair (from blogging, usually :)) it hurts. For me the big difference is pace. If I run fast it gets worse. If I go longer but slower, it gets better. If it's the same as mine, don't sprint on it--no matter what kind of euphoric delirium it enduces! ;) Also, the last time I had hip pain, getting my lower back adjusted by the chiro fixed it. I'm going back tonight to get it done again.

From Sasha Pachev on Mon, Sep 17, 2007 at 16:31:43

194 is a reasonable max heart rate. You definitely do not want to train at it all the time, especially early on before you gain a serious level of fitness. This does show, though, that your training heart rate should be around 140 right now, but do not take it too religiously, only as a guideline.

Yes, there is something liberating about being able to sustain a fast pace, it brings a level of satisfaction no carnal pleasure can match.

For homeschooling we use a chicken soup of stuff. The basic idea is to teach core skills (reading, writing, typing, math), and then give the children the time to learn what they feel like using those skills. I do not think it is the curriculum itself that leads to success in homeschooling, rather it is the consistency, and the work ethic, and the values you are teaching.

From laura on Mon, Sep 17, 2007 at 23:56:43

I don't think I could train at a 194 heart rate if I wanted to - I think my vision blurred for a moment when I got to the top of that hill. But my husband said to push it just for a bit to figure out what my max and aerobic levels are. I was surprised while I was running. It seemed that I often stayed right around 170. Am I pushing it too much compared to the 140 you recommend? It didn't feel too bad around 170, but I could certainly feel it when I approached 180 and that's when I usually started walking.

From Sasha Pachev on Tue, Sep 18, 2007 at 13:03:11

What kind of activity would it take you to sustain your HR at 140, and how long can you do it for? What about 150? 160?

I should've gone on Saturday. Lazy bones - no better excuse. Today felt good though. I kept it slow and took walking breaks when my breath was really labored. I also took Mike's iPod, which was a fun distraction with upbeat music. It's funny what a little music can do. Those commercials that say "Life needs a soundtrack" are right on!

I went to the chiro again and he took x-rays of my low back. We didn't get a chance to go over them; but as I was leaving, he said from a quick look at my x-ray, it's obvious my pelvis is off and it looks like the hip joint is wearing down a little. Ugh. Not what I wanted to hear.

Laura, yikes, if you can't run for a while, hit the cardio hard on a bike, swim, something. Legs question, yes St.George is very tough on the quads with the steep downhill portions of the course. TOU was and up and down course with the downhill not that steep. Although St.George is a faster course, TOU is much easier on the legs. I am no doctor, but, it seems get the alignment problem taken care of, you down want to wear down you hip joint at your young age. I am a worry wart, take your vitamins, calcium, also, glucosmime, MSM, choration. JointFlex vitiamins, they are expensive, but the really work. I guess I can't help but give fatherly advice as you and Lybi are about the same age as my two daughters. Take care, get healthy.

6.62 miles on a mountain bike on a hill-y trail. My husband took our two youngest girls in the bike trailer, but he still kicked my trash! My legs (and behind) were good and tired when I got home. It was a really good workout for me, much prettier scenery than being on the elliptical, fun to exercise with my husband, and easier on my hip. Yea!!!!

I've been a little scared to run since I saw my chiro on Monday, but I think this morning I've decided to get a second opinion on my hip - from a real doctor instead of a chiro.

I meant to take my heart rate monitor this morning so I could answer Sasha's question about what activity causes my heart rate to be at 140, 150 and 160 -- but I forgot. So, I just tried to walk more to keep my heart rate down and more aerobic. My hip hasn't hurt hardly at all today.

By the way, that conversation about the oatmeal was very interesting!! This morning I had a hard boiled egg with my oatmeal (I can't remember who mentioned it) and I wasn't hungry for 6 hours!! I couldn't believe it; having just one of those, I would've been hungry within 3 hours, but put them together and it was amazingly satisfying! Amazing the things I'm learning on this blog!

Your right.. I love the amazing things that I learn on the blog too! I usually don't have either for breakfast, but it sounds like a good combination, might have to give it a try!!

I'll be interested to hear about your second opinion, do you have an apt. sheduled? what are you going to see an orthopedist? Good luck!

From laura on Fri, Sep 21, 2007 at 00:33:57

No, I don't have anything scheduled yet. My daughter was really sick all day and I wasn't able to think of much; but I was thinking of an orthopedist or even a physical therapist or physiatrist. I wasn't sure. I was going to check around. Thanks for your encouragement!!

From Mom on Fri, Sep 21, 2007 at 15:15:03

Poor Cami. Poor Mommy. I hope you all get well soon. Miraculously my elliptical exerciser started working again this morning. I had decided to use it even though it was stuck on 8. So I went out there and the computer controller worked. So I am off and running (in a stationary way) again. Did 5 minutes because it has been about 4 months or more so I am starting slowly. I think I'll add a minute each day. My heart rate stays at 130 most of the time.

From Kristina on Fri, Sep 21, 2007 at 16:17:35

Yea for breakfast! I eat so much better when I eat breakfast with your parents. Normally I'm to sleeping and lazy to eat a good breakfast but eating cracked grain and eggs with your parents makes such a big difference.

I'm glad you are getting a second opinion. Hopefully you can find a doctor that can give you some useful advice for correcting any misalignment you may have. I'm glad you were able to walk without your hip hurting.

From Kristina on Fri, Sep 21, 2007 at 16:19:14

By the way, the doctor that helped me the most was a D.O. doctor. Also my dad got hit by a car and has a lot of back trouble because his back got thrown out of alignment and stayed that way for 10 or so years. This same D.O. doctor did wonders for my dad and gave him some great exercises.

I'm still feeling sick, but I wanted to get out today. I might pay for it later, but it was nice to be out in the autumn air. I could tell my lungs were tired from all the coughing spells I've been having lately. I keep thinking about my 5k coming up and I'm struck with panic and uncertainty: "maybe I'm not ready", "I might make a fool of myself coming in last", "next Springs is a great time to race". On task, Laura! Last place is better than no place at all!!!!!

From Lybi on Tue, Sep 25, 2007 at 15:57:19

You won't come in last, so banish that thought. I don't think people ever really do come in last in 5Ks. Somehow people consistently materialize on the course until, like, the next day or something. It's a real phenomenon. On the track it is different. I've come in last on the track before. But I still finished hard, and actually, I got a standing ovation, so it can't be that bad, can it? You can't come in laster than I did--almost 2 laps all by myself, yet most of those ladies I ran against are on the couch right now eating potato chips, so there you go. I win.

From Heber on Wed, Sep 26, 2007 at 11:03:16

Be careful with that cough. I had a nagging cough for two weeks and then found out it had turned into pneumonia. No good.

Remember to break up your run into run/walk segments. Some people stop running for the day the first time they feel they have to stop. Instead just walk for a minute or two and then start running again. That will help you go farther.

From Kristina on Wed, Sep 26, 2007 at 11:09:42

I'm sorry you are sick. That is no fun. I like what Heber said. If you start feeling to tired to keep running, it is great to continue walking rather than stop all together.

Anyway, it is true that last place tends to get more cheers than first place (and I have A LOT of experience with last place). I wouldn't worry about coming in last. It's really not so bad. The important thing is to beat your own goals and times rather than worry about beating other people (though other people can help push you to beat your own times).

Take it easy. I hope you feel better. You've got your mom on the way :)

I finally got out to run - it had been a long time!! When I said that I might pay for my last run (last week), I really did. Plus we went out of town for 5 days and I had back and neck pain. I still have a cough - it doesn't seem to be getting better at all - but I don't have the aches or chills. It was amazingly hard to run today so I found myself walking much more. But I apparently wasn't paying attention to my pace while I was running because my average pace is the same, which means I was running much faster than usual. Oops.

I went to a new chiropractor last week. He uses the Active Release Technique and works mostly with athletes. I was amazed and so pleased!! After 6 weeks of never being without hip pain, I actually had NO hip pain for 5 days!! Unfortunately it didn't last because I had a lot of low back issues while I was out of town which probably threw my hip out again. So, I'm going to see him again on Monday. Hopefully I'll get over this plaguing cough soon and be able to run on a daily basis - finally! I've had to take it easy on my hip ever since I began.

You are lucky. My chiropractor is just like that and he has helped me so much. In fact just yesterday I went about MY hip troubles and now I'm feeling great. Did he do ART on your hip? That's what mine did: on my lower stomach right near the hip bone, the inside of my thigh, and my piriformis muscle in back. It changed my walking/running dynamics right away.

Tell me about the cough. I was coughing up phlegm for two weeks before I went to a Dr. By then it had become pneumonia. Are these productive coughs or just throat coughs?

From Kristina on Wed, Oct 03, 2007 at 15:05:37

There's nothing wrong with taking it easy! I think it is great that you are exercising. It's really hard to exercise when you have pain. I'm a big baby so I admire you for trying so much.

Whenever I get a cold or a cough I tend to cough for a long time, even after I don't feel sick any more. Sometimes in the winter I just end up with a perma-cough. But if it's phlegmy I agree that you should probably see a doctor.

From laura on Wed, Oct 03, 2007 at 15:07:30

Not all the coughs are productive, but yes, I'm getting lovely phlegm. I keep wonndering if I DO need to see a doctor - you've got me worried! ;o) I haven't been to a doctor for a sickness in years!!

I did my first practice 5k today in 40:00! I was so frustrated that I couldn't find a time on Mon or Tuesday to run, so today I hired a babysitter. My splits were:

1 - 12:53

2 - 13:06

3 - 12:47

last .1 - 1:14

with an average pace of 12:54. This was actually better than I expected. My previous runs were averaging in the 15:00 range so I was worried it would take me over 45 minutes. The extra .3 in my total miles were for warm up and cool down.

It was a very different run for me since it's the longest I've gone so far. Usually I just listen to my heart and lungs and when they seem overly labored, I start walking. But with this run, something internal kept saying, "Ugh. What are you doing!" after I passed my normal 1.85 normal distance. I feel good now and am very happy that I was able to do my first 5k without dying. I also found it interesting that I ran differently when I was on the sidewalk then when I was on the trail - knowing that other people were watching me made me less aware of my running.

Proud of your dedication! Be careful on uphills because you can strain the tendons around your ankles. The key is to keep up the same pace (in terms of steps per minute) but take much shorter strides. If you take the same size steps then you stretch you peroneal tendons.

At mile 2, my left knee hurt and I had to stop. I was able to walk it out, but the next mile, it kept coming and going. I've never had this happen with my knee before. Usually if it hurts, I'm in trouble the entire way home. Very strange. So, it was an okay run/walk/limp today. ha! Although my hip is still much better because of the ART chiropractor, I think I still have to bite the bullet and actually go to a doctor. I'm somewhat doctor-averse. ... From Heber on Mon, Oct 15, 2007 at 12:10:16

Tell me about the knee pain. Perhaps I can help figure out what it is. My guess would be that it is caused by the hip problem. When we have an injury or pain somewhere it causes us to run differently to try to accommodate. It's subconscious so you aren't really aware you are doing it. But these accommodations put stress on new parts of the body that eventually complain. Fix the hip and the knee pain will go away.

From Sasha Pachev on Mon, Oct 15, 2007 at 12:16:23

I think you are increasing the mileage too fast. Keep it down to 2 miles a day, but make it consistent 2 miles, no skipping, 6 days a week. Also, do not force the pace, do not even time it. Just go by feel. Do that for the next 3 weeks, then try adding occasional 3 mile runs to test the waters, but only if you have succeeded the no skipping part. If those 3 mile runs do not aggravate the knee, then move to steady 3 miles a day.

The no skipping part is critical to injury prevention. If you try to up the mileage before you are consistent at a lower mileage, this invites problems, especially if the higher mileage is a life-time high.

[I never had time to post my run on Tuesday.] Kept it closesr to 2 miles per Sasha's recommendation. But I still think I want to run one more practice 5K before the race on Saturday.

I finally went back to that initial chiropractor who took x-rays of my hips. I wish he hadn't ever said anything in the first place because he scared me quite a bit and was actually wrong in his initial assessment. He initially said my hip looked like it was "wearing down". But on Monday, when we actually went over them, he said that they look fine, but that I need to take it easy. He thought I'd been running all my life, but I told him I'm just beginning and was never even in sports in high school. So, any wear and tear is just because of life; not from 2 months of running!!! I have some curvature in my back, and my hips and knees have had to compensate throughout my life. Anyway, the long and the short of it is - don't take medical advice from a chiropractor!

I have a friend who's an avid runner and also a Physician's Assistant. When I was explaining my hip problem, she said that it sounds like my IT band. (I think this is what Heber said that it was too.) She recommended Yoga. In fact, she said if it wasn't for Yoga, she probably wouldn't be able to run at all. And she's done Boston in 3:33. So, I'm going to keep running, try to squeeze in Yoga somehow, and see an orthopoedist (just in case).

From Lybi on Wed, Oct 17, 2007 at 11:49:44

Well, I'm relieved about your hip! IT band is really important to stretch. The way I do it is to sit down and pull my leg across my chest, so I'm hugging my knee. Feels pretty good. (At least, I HOPE that is stretching my IT band.) I also do the butterfly stretch--feet in front, soles together, and lean forward.

I'm so excited about your 5K! Good luck!

From Heber on Wed, Oct 17, 2007 at 13:53:09

I've been getting into yoga for just that reason. Stretches places you often forget exist.

Took a different route - less hills and all sidewalk. (I usually take a trail that's a little hilly.) It was a beautifiul Autumn morning!!!!

I need to remember to take my knee brace tomorrow and difinitely to the race on Saturday too because my knee keeps trying to flare up and slow me down. Hip felt great.

You are racing on Saturday? That is so great! I'm glad that your hip is doing better. My knee has been doing lots better since I got new shoes. Taking new trails is also fun. I get really bored really quickly when I take the same path too often, so much so that I start to dread going running. I had to take new path today too. :)

Last practice 5K before my race . . . Ummm . . . Blast. For some reason this whole morning, I've been thinking that today is Thursday and that I have tomorrow to take it easy. It wasn't until just now that I realized that TODAY is Friday. Oops. ha, ha, ha. What an idiot. Oh well. It's only a benchmark 5K anyway. In fact, I probably shouldn't have even signed up for it this early on in my training. Sasha is quite right about my distancce - I feel great for the first 2 miles and then I struggle with my silly knees the last mile. So after this race, I'm going to stick to 2 miles for 3-4 weeks. I'm not really sorry that I'm racing, though - I needed something to motivate me and make me excited about running. I just feel a little dumb today that I botched my prep. Oh well. Can't undo it; the accomplishment tomorrow will not be in my finishing time, but in my finishing!

BTW, I have an Orthopedist appt next Tuesday.

I think that 65% or more of running is all mental, and you have all you need to there to get through the race tomorrow! So go out there and tell yourself how great you are and have a great time! Your going to do great. Don't focus on your time just enjoy all the people running with you and the accomplishment of having set a goal and then completed it! Good Luck!!!

From Lybi on Fri, Oct 19, 2007 at 15:39:46

Laura you should be proud. Not many people in early training forget and run too long! Good luck on your race tomorrow! I am so excited to read your race report...

You should take a before and after picture. Oh, and I hope you don't have anything planned for the rest of the day tomorrow. (He he he.) Love you!

From Christi on Fri, Oct 19, 2007 at 16:46:02

I agree w/ Michelle- so much is mental. Don't let the fact that you ran today psych you out. Think of it as loosening your legs for tomorrow! I think you're gonna have a blast and it will really help you plan your training and what to focus on afterward. Is anybody else you know running it with you?

My first race!!!! Where to begin. . .

Well, all day yesterday I worried that I was going to hurt myself if I ran the race today since I wasn't thinking and ran 3 miles that morning. I called my brother, Heber, and he recommended that I massage my legs to help them recovery quicker; and if I still didn't feel good, that it wasn't a bad cause to simply donate the $20 registration fee to (hee, hee). Actually, I had already thought of that; and this morning when I woke up and my legs felt a little sore, I thought about it again. But, I didn't think that I was feeling sore enough to really skip my very first race. So, I got ready and headed out the door.

It was a 5K run or a 3K walk for the Pikes Peak Region Peace Officers Memorial. The weather, though chilly in the low 50's while waiting around, was great for running and there was no breeze. It was a flatter course than I've ever run in my practice runs, so that was very helpful! I didn't take my Garmin, so I wouldn't be distracted by how much farther I had to go. This was good for that reason, but also bad because I'm not really sure what my correct finishing time was! When I came in, I saw the clock say 36:37, but on the unofficial report, I came in at 35:55. I'd love to claim the faster time, but I think the 36 is more accurate. And even at 36:37, it's over 4 minutes faster than any of my practice runs. My knee only hurt for about 15 seconds a little after the first mile, and then it didn't bother me at all! My hips felt great too! And I cranked up my iPod, so I didn't even pay attention to my heavy breathing (which was quite distracting, actually, when I could hear it in between each song - ha!)

I was able to run almost the entire time, which was amazing for me!!! I only walked about 4 times, and only for a short distance. I don't know my splits since I didn't have my watch, but I felt great the whole time! I told my husband that he did such a great job massaging my legs, that he saved me from a potentially horrible race!!! Plus, he might be stuck doing it next time!!! ;o)

The best part of raccing was the distraction of having other runners around me and coming in at the finish line to a smiling husband and my 3 girls!!! Overall, I am very happy with my first race. I was able to run without hurting, enjoy the moment, and come in at a time that I was secretly hoping for (anything around 36 mnutes was my hope, but I would've been content with anything faster than 40:00 which is what I was doing in my practice runs).

Yeah!!!!

From Sasha Pachev on Mon, Oct 22, 2007 at 16:56:25

Good work! Note that running 3 miles earlier for you right now makes quite a bit of a difference. It is like for a higher mileage runner to warm up with an half marathon at an easy pace, and then to race a half marathon afterwards. But this is good training.

Laura, you won several things doing this race, 100 commando points for your first 5k with no complaints, more self conficence and real runner status. These commando points are very valuable and will be turned in for runnner high moments when you least expect. Great, real happy for you.

I just realized that I haven't run a single Monday this entire month!!! What a slacker! I must really hate Mondays more than I consciously realize. ;o)

Different route today - again. But it wasn't a great route because there were parts when there was no sidewalk and the snow is melting. Yup, that's right . . . the SNOW!!! On Saturday the temperatures got up in the 70's and we woke up on Sunday morning to a couple inches of snow. Love Colorado! (crazy place) :)

Thanks, everyone, for your support in my first race. It was fun and I learned quite a lot about myself and how I race. I've been figuring that I actually could've given more at the very end. So, today when I got to the end of my run and my body was trying to tell me to walk, I kicked it up and sprinted home!!!

Orthopedist today said the cartilage (sp?) in my hips is great. It's not my IT band of bursitis. There's a small cyst on the inside of my hip joint that he's not terrible worried about in itself, but he wants an MRI to make sure there's nothing causing it. He also gave me a script for PT. Happy days (except the thought of sitting in a noisy MRI machine for 1/2 an hour!!! I keep thinking about it and getting shivers!)

Good job on your run today. You're starting to get that runner attitude! Hugs!

Great, great run!!!! I was able - for the first time - to run WITHOUT WALKING at all!!!!! I am so happy! After I pushed past the first urge to walk, I made it to a mile and kept thinkin, "Hey, I'm not dying; I can go further." And then, I became determined not to walk until after 2 miles. And then, I figured I might as well make it all the way home! I even kicked it up a notch on the last bit. My splits were:

1 - 11:21

2 - 12:14

.25 - 10:32

Ave - 11:39

I didn't mean to go fast, but that's actually faster than my 5K race average! Maybe it's because I had such a lazy day reading Twilight ... the whole day (ooops). That book is so addicting! I read the whole thing in less than 24 hours and its 500 pages!!! Crazy. I want to start the next book (New Moon), but I think my children need to see my face for a few days without having to peak over a book. lol

What a crazy day!! I ran this afternoon, but haven't had a moment to log it until now (10 p.m.). We had our ward Halloween party tonight and I only had 2 of our 5 costumes done. It was kind of fun, I have to admit. This year I actually did a theme for our costumes: my husband and I were convicts, Cami was a police officer, and the babies were money bags. It turned out cute. But the party was too late for my little ones. Audrey was beside herself by the time we got home; and Hayley wasn't far behind her!! Cami was still feeling sick today, so I'm amazed she did as well as she did at the ward party. The kitchen and house are finally put back together again and I can relax. . .

Today's run was a bit of a bummer. I forgot to turn off my iPod the other day, so it was dead; and I didn't realize how much having music was a great distraction for me until I was struggling to keep from walking and finally succombed. Bummer. Also, my left knee bothered me more on my second mile. The orthopedist could tell just be feeling my knees, that my left knee was weaker. Guess I better work on that, huh?

Happy Halloween!!! What a slacker I've been in my running!! Maybe I need to find another race so I have something looming in the future that gets my lazy self out in the freezing cold!! At least I'm done with the Twilight series, though, so I won't be so obsessed with reading instead of doing what I should - like running! I'm not sure I'm totally happy with the ending of the Twilight series, by the way. I spent most of my run today trying to reconcile myself to it. lol

I took my old route this morning and almost did it without walking. At my halfway point, my legs started walking without consulting my head first. Ugh. Today was my first day to run in the cold. It was 35 degrees. It wasn't as bad as I thought, although I've been coughing ever since I got home. ha! I think it's somehow a city law that Halloween can't be warm in Colorado Springs! It's been in the 70s until today! It's like that every year - relatively warm until Halloween when all the poor children are dressed up in paper thin Princess or Superman costumes. Poor trick or treaters! Luckily we don't have children who know what they're missing when we don't go Trick or Treating. That lucky window will be closing soon, though, I'm sure, as Hayley gets older. Hee,hee! We went to the Ward trunk or treat but had to leave before the candy was passed out because Audrey was soooo tired.

My oldest daughter is on her way to Denver Children's hospital today for a gait analysis. This is the first test of hers that I have not been there for. She's going with Daddy while I stay home with the babies. I feel very weird not being the one to take her. I know it would've been miserable taking the babies - or even just Audrey; but I can't help feeling like I'm the one who has to be there for every medical test or therapy session that she has. The results of the analysis will tell us which braces will be best for her (and if she's over braced right now) and if there are any surgeries that they recommend now or in the future. It's a 3 hour analysis!!! And the report will be about 20 pages long! Crazy, huh? Hopefully it will be very helpful, though.

I thought it was going to be cold today, so I took a long sleeve shirt but it turned out to be too much. By the time I went it was 50 degrees with no wind and plenty of sun. Beautiful day for a run! I went 2 miles at a slower pace but with NO walking!!!!! It's funny -- it seems that if I can get past my halfway point without walking, then I can always make it home without walking. It's that first half that's the hardest mentally, and even physically, for me.

Comments
From Brent on Thu, Nov 01, 2007 at 21:11:20

Laura, mental, you are tough, just look at the next tree down the road, next telephone poll, run to it, then pick out the next land marker when you are getting mentally tired. Never think about how far you have left to go. Start finding some positive mental games that work for you. Imagine you are winning the Boston Marathon. One of my games was to dream of Bill Rogers and me dueling it out down to the finish at Boston, Bill won, but he said great effort. Effort, that is ultimately your reward disguished as work. I have said too much, you can do it.

From Heber on Fri, Nov 02, 2007 at 09:00:47

Good run this afternoon. No walking and no pain!!! The only problem with waiting to go running until it warms up a little is that I don't end up showering till the afternnon and I feel like a sloth the whole morning. I might have to figure something else out. I went today at 1:00 and it was 45 degrees. Running much colder than that is tough; after I run, I end up coughing for the rest of the day. So. . . we'll see.

Today I might've had an inkling of what the "zone" feels like. On my second mile, I realized that I didn't have to convince my legs to keep going - it was just automatic and my breathing had finally found a rhythm that wasn't so close to huffing and puffing. It was quite an epiphany, actually.

I had a couple of firsts today!!! First time to run 3.1 miles without ANY walking! First time to run in the early evening as the sun was setting (I'm a bit of a safety freak - I always vary my running time and route)! And it was my first week to run 4 days in a row!!! Yea!!!!

5K in 37:07 minutes - only about 30 seconds slower than my race, which I was very happy about! My splits were:

1 - 11:25

2 - 12:39 (gradual uphill the whole time)

3 - 11:57

I started walking after the 3.1 benchmark and then stopped to talk to a neighbor, so my other times are not very helpful. The only problem I had on this run was with my back ... well, actually my rib! This silly rib has been giving me problems off and on for a month now. It usually only bugs me when I cough; but after 3 miles, I couldn't breathe deeply without being in a lot of pain. So when I came home, I massaged it, and now I'm feeling much better. But it's probably time to head back to the chiropractor. I think the rib issue is just an occupational hazard of having little ones to pick up all the time, plus I'm still nursing. But other than the rib - no knee or hip problems, no walking, and I'm feeling great!!!!

Isn't this weather amazing! I am loving it! But at the same time dreading the up coming freeze...O'well we'll just love it while we got it! Good job getting out today, I had the same kinda day but eventually made it!

From Sasha Pachev on Thu, Nov 08, 2007 at 13:07:47

Laura - you will see a major breakthrough once you establish a pattern of training six days a week. You can build a very decent level of endurance on two miles a day six days a week. Two miles is only 25 minutes of running for you now, and will soon become 20. It does not take that much extra time, and those first two miles of your run done daily is where you get the most bang for the buck. Doing something as simple as setting your alarm clock to 30 minutes earlier can give you the time to never miss a training day.

From laura on Thu, Nov 08, 2007 at 22:57:46

Sasha, I appreciate your encouragement so much! Unfortunately an early morning run won't work right now. The temps in the morning are around freezing or below and when I went running last time at 35 degrees, I coughed all day (I've been fighting an itch in my lungs for over a month now). I've thought that maybe it's time to invest in a treadmill so I can run in the evenings at home. Maybe I'll ask around on the Discussion Board to see if anyone has recommendations for styles and brands.

From Sasha Pachev on Thu, Nov 08, 2007 at 23:23:17

You probably just ran too hard. Either that, or perhaps some lung problem. 35 degrees is not cold at all for moderate intensity running. Try running slower, make sure the breathing is comfortable enough to talk.

From Sasha Pachev on Thu, Nov 08, 2007 at 23:24:08

Also, make sure to properly protect your chest when running in colder weather.

From laura on Thu, Nov 08, 2007 at 23:33:27

That's what was so funny about that cold run - I wasn't coughing while I was running, but the rest of the day I was. Odd. I think it's a lung issue that I can't seem to kick. I even tried Claritin for a few days on Lybi's recommendation. Hmm.

I'm proud of you for being consistent. You remind me a lot of well..me when I first started out a few years ago...I remember feeling like I could run a marathon once I crossed the four mile barrier. Keep up the good work. Is that your little girl? She is so cute!!

From laura on Thu, Nov 08, 2007 at 23:37:55

Yes, Lybi was ALWAYS been funny. I'm older by 2.5 years, but she always outshines me. But it's okay, cuz I like laughing along with everyone else.

Ha,ha! Sarah, that's so true. I came home after running 3 miles and was sure I was headed for great things!!! ;o)

Yes, both girls in the picture are mine. The baby is so fair skinned; sometimes I feel like we're a commercial for ebony and ivory! They are so fun, though. I'm sure Hayley (on my hip) is going to be a great runner. She's so coordinated and has so much energy.

5K in 35:22!!!!! That's over a minute faster than my race time!!!! Woohoo! It's funny; I thought I was doing terrible. The first mile and a half were on a gradual uphill and I wasn't sure I was going to make it without walking; and then the way home was getting dark and I couldn't check my pace. So, when I finally looked at 3.1 miles, I was soooo surprised and happy!

I've thought a lot about what you said, Brent. I'm going to work to make sure none of my runs are "uneventful." I can see that feeling blah about my running will lead to not wanting to run more - and then stopping eventually. So, I'm going to look for something in each run that makes it eventful and interesting! I told this to Lybi and she said I could always TP a car or something. ha,ha - probably not what you had in mind, huh, Brent! But it sure would make it eventful!! ;o)

From laura on Sun, Nov 11, 2007 at 22:32:14

No, I really haven't been having much pain. Occassionally my hip hurts after I've been sitting for a while; but it's no longer correlated to my running. And sometimes when I'm running, my knee lets me know that it's unhappy; but it's usually something I can run through and it eventually goes away.

Thanks, Michelle!! Are you still coming off your vacation high, or are you firmly back home and in the trenches again? hee, hee.

Woohoo, I ran on a Monday again! I took the heart rate monitor today, just for kicks. I'm quite certain now that my route is downhill on the way home because my heart rate kept getting lower and lower as I headed home. But I was actually surprised the my actual heart rate was not much lower than it was over a month ago. I still get up in the 170 range, and even 180's when I'm really dying (steep uphill). But on my way home, when I'm warmed up and going slightly downhill, my heart rate was in the 150's and 160's. So I'm not sure if my cardio has really improved yet or not. I know my will power has improved - to push through the desire to walk. But I think I'll check my heart rate again in a month or so.

My pace is still pretty consistent - average 11:52 (faster for downhill stretches, and slower for uphill, obviously).

Comments
From Lybi on Mon, Nov 12, 2007 at 23:44:37

I'm sure your cardio is improving! You are keeping the same bpm, but you are spending much more time running, and much less walking. That's improvement!

From Heber on Tue, Nov 13, 2007 at 15:15:10

I've noticed the heart rate dropping after a few minutes also. I think the aerobic system takes a few minutes to really get working.

It's not your heart rate while exercising that tells you if you are getting more fit though. That's because as you get faster you are doing more work per unit time so even if you are more fit the heart rate might be the same. Check your heart rate first thing in the morning, before you get out of bed. That is your resting heart rate and it will drop pretty significantly as you get more fit.

It's been a loooong week! My husband has been out of town and my oldest daughter has been throwing up and had diarrhea 3 times this week. I know that I could've done aerobics after the kids went to bed at night, but I never seemed to have it in me. So today, I think I headed out for my run within an hour of him getting home! It was a tough run (which I knew it would be since I haven't been out since Monday!) but my pace didn't suffer and I still didn't walk. So, here's for husbands coming home from business trips!!!!! HALLELUJAH!!!!

(My poor husband -- when he finally got home, all 3 children had been crying/screaming for the last hour and a half and nothing I could do was enough; I could comfort 2 of them, but the third would be crying! So by the time he got home, I was in tears to see him too! I told him that I was so happy to have him home, even if -for the moment - it was 95% because he could help me!! Long week.)

But when I got to my street, I was bummed that I wouldn't have at least 2 miles, so I kept running. And then I kept telling myself that I would run to a certain spot and then turn around, but when I got there I kept going!! ha,ha! So, I ended up getting a decent run in anyway! Today's run was very slow and highlighted by many dogs scaring the life out of me! I don't usually have a problem with dogs, but today, I must've smelled especially suspicious. When I got home, I couldn't find my husband or the girls but I noticed there was a voice mail; when I checked it, it was my husband!! I didn't have much time between having the missionaries over for lunch and a doctor's appointment, but I didn't want to fail on my goal on the 2nd day! So, I ran to my friend's house to lend her a book. Although it was a short run, it was a mammoth hill (I have conveniently avoided going that direction on all my runs just to avoid it!)

I'm terrible at remembering to eat after my runs. Yesterday, I only ate a granola bar after my run, and that evening I kept feeling sick and ache-y until after dinner. Ridiculous, huh? I thought I was just getting more sick (I have a sore throat and the sniffles - who doesn't this time of year!?!) but when I felt better after eating, I knew I had not replenished my system enough after running. Duh.

My doctor's appt was yuck. I've had a stye in my eye ever since February and it has never gone away! So, I finally had it lanced today. Yuck. I hate eye things!!! I was white knuckling it and almost hyperventilating during the whole procedure. I hope I NEVER have to do that again!

Man, I have GOT to remember to take gloves tomorrow! Yesterday and today, my hands were freezing for the first mile. Luckily, I finally warm up; but it sure is uncomfortable! It's above freezing when I go, but it's been windy lately.

I'm apparently very clumsy these days: yesterday I tumbled down the stairs and today I tripped and fell on my run (on the gravel, as I was turning around). When I first started this run, my shoulders were so sore from my lovely fall down the stairs that I was practically grunting! But after a while, the pain subsided. So, it was actually a nice run today, even considering the soreness in my back and the fall. It's weird when you can say that, huh? But when I came home and was stretching out, I was thinking how much I'm enjoying running.

It was much warmer today so I didn't need to try running with gloves, but it was so windy that I almost lost my hat a couple times! I don't know if it was because of the wind, or my last 2 weeks of slacking, or the handful of contraband Oreo's before my run (that gave me a slight cramp the whole time-- though still worth it!) but I couldn't seem to go very fast. So I just went as fast as my body wanted to go, which was only 12:26 ave pace. After my run and stretching, I took a really hot bath instead of a shower and right now I feel GREAT!!! The bath helped the muscles that were still tender from my many tumbles lately. Although it was hard to get out the door today, I feel great now!

I like to celebrate every little achievement! And I feel like a true runner today because I ran through the rain. Somehow that seems like a rite of passage or something.

We had a book club luncheon at my house today - our once a year tradition. We read Ladies Auxiliary, which is set in a Jewish Orthodox society; and since we're a few days away from Hannakah, I decorated in blue and white and someone brought latkes. It was fun. Christmas is going to be much more fun this year since our 6 year old is finally very excited about the tree and presents - and our 1 year old is actually leaving the tree alone (partly out of fear - it scratched her as we were setting it up and she hasn't forgiven it!) Yes, need more sleep! Sasha may chime in here too, but from my own experience, if I don't get enough sleep, not only am I more irritable, but my running also suffers, and I become more prone to injury if the sleep deprivation continues long enough. With all you are doing, you should be trying to get at least 8 hours of sleep, especially when you tack on running.

From laura on Wed, Dec 05, 2007 at 22:11:10

Yes, James, I think 8-9 hours is what I'll shoot for. As you know, though, once the kids are in bed and you finally have quiet and freedom, the hours FLY so much faster and before you know it ... it's 11:30. Ugh. But I certainly don't want to get any injuries, and I'm tired of feeling hammered every day; so I'm going to try to make it to bed by 9:30 or earlier!

No running today. My foot was hurting a little this morning, and as after shopping and a RS Christmas party, it is now hurting so much that I'm limping horribly. It's the same foot that I hurt when I fell down the stairs last week; but I've been able to run on it 3-4 times since then -- so why is it starting to hurt now? Well, my foot is finally feeling good enough to run. I had it wrapped and limping for 2 days; the 3rd day I was hurting everywhere else from limping; and the 4th day the pain was almost completely gone. So really, I should've gone running yesterday but I was absorbed in a book again.

Today, I can finally say that I ran through the snow, while it was snowing, and when it was below freezing (all 3 firsts for me!) The snow made downhill a dream - easy and padded. Uphill was tough, though. I had to laugh at my outfit, too -- I was so worried that I didn't have warm enough running gear, so I piled on everything I could think of. So, while I was running in 2 pairs of socks, 2 pants, 2 shirts, a windbreaker, a hat, and a scarf .... I remembered Sasha saying that 20 degrees was the borderline for him between shorts or pants. I was running in 25 degrees, and would've died in shorts! Of course, I only went 2 miles (rather than 7-15 that he runs) and was comfortable the first mile and carrying my scarf and gloves on the second mile. lol

Glad I finally got out. I was actually missing it. (Never thought I'd feel that way about running - that is progress all in itself, isn't it?)

Yeah!! Sounds like you are getting better. Don't push your foot. If it was sprained, it takes longer to heal than you can believe. So listen to your body. I am proud of you that you look forward to running and miss it. I can't believe this is my little LaLa. PS What book were you involved in?

Three cheers for the abominable running snowgirl! Although, now I have guilt...and no more excuses!

Adversity, keep strong mentally, "you can do it". Winter days running can easily be dismissed for many reasons. I always think, I don't want to lose the conditioning gained, that gets me out the door.

Ha...yes...that is true about Sasha. The man will run in shorts in very cold weather. He of course runs faster than a lot of people and as a rule probably has more blood vessels or bigger ones or something that an exercise physiologist could explain to you. I am very proud of you for running in the cold. It really isn't so bad. I draw the line at thunderstorms, hail, um...sleet..you know but cold isn't that bad....

From laura on Tue, Dec 11, 2007 at 20:06:57

Thanks, Mom and Mike! I don't know about the guilt, Mike. I'm not out there at 4:30 in the morning with 9 degree weather, cycling. I'm still snuggled in bed .. unaware of the guilt I should be feeling. :o)

Brent, I appreciate your comment. You always seem to say the right thing. It's absolutely true that I don't want to lose my conditioning. The first 3 months were slow going and I don't want to go back to the beginning again.

From Lybi on Tue, Dec 11, 2007 at 20:10:46

Yea Laura! What a woman! Some day you'll be out on a 8-9 mile run while it snows and come back looking like the Abominable Snow Mommy.

PS I've started running on the treadmill because it is getting colder--even below 50 degrees sometimes. Sheesh! (Ha ha)

From Jody on Tue, Dec 11, 2007 at 20:14:44

Great Job! Realizing you miss running is the best. I'd rather take off layers then freeze any day.

I think your right the first few days of running in the snow is fun, but I think that it might get old fast!!!!

From laura on Wed, Dec 12, 2007 at 10:51:41

Sarah, I was actually thinking about you as I was running yesterday! I was remembering your blog last week when you talked about all the boys who you dated in college and how 2 Sashas told you they loved you on the same day ... and a few other funny incidents. Too funny. I'm sorry you're not pregnant, but glad that you are able to get some medication to help with your thyroid.

Lybi, you're a hoot. Are you really running on the treadmill because it's ... too cold outside? Actually, I guess you could tease me the opposite way. When you ran your race this summer in 105 degree weather, I was sure that would've put me 6 feet under!

Thanks, Jody and Michelle, for your encouragement!! Jody, your obstacle running course in the snow, ice, and dangerous limbs sounds way more exciting than mine was!!

From Kristina on Wed, Dec 12, 2007 at 11:18:54

Wow Laura! I am impressed and I also think you are going crazy. It is not even snowing here and I think it is too cold to run outside. I guess it's because my high school CC coach made me paranoid about freezing my lungs :P But I'm impressed at how much you are doing and how much you are improving. I guess I should stop saying I'm too busy because you are way busier than I am! Way to go!

This is actually a guesstimate on my mileage because my garmin wigged out for some reason. I actually ran in the dark tonight and it wasn't nearly as scary as I always thought it would be. I was dreading going on the elliptical tonight, so even though it was 15 degrees and dark, I bundled up and went running. I only wore 1 shirt this time (see my abominable snowman gear from my last run) and didn't take my scarf, but I used a ski mask for my cheeks and face. I really liked the ski mask -- even though it got a little hot on the uphills, it was great for the downhills. It was a little icy out tonight, but I never tripped, luckily. I went without my iPod so I could be aware of my surroundings, and it was actually enjoyable -- it was so peaceful and I just listened to the rhythm of the crunching snow and my breathing, while I sang Christmas carols in my head. I wanted to go a little longer, but chickened out in the end. Nice run - felt great!

Nice job getting out! That sure sounds (brrrrr!) cold to me! But the peaceful nights run sounds very enjoyable! I like to run in the dark too, I don't pay attention to the hills and just do it!

I tried Yoga tonight. It was hard on my wrists with all the down dogs (I don't even know if that's correctly spelled for yoga) but it was good for my arms. I think I'll try adding it on after a run sometime because I missed the workout that running is for my legs.

My garmin is really acting weird! It said that my run today was 3.8 miles, when I know it was closer to 3.1. Plus, I'm sure that my average pace was not 8 something, like it was saying. Very odd. Is there someway to fix a garmin that's acting up??

Anyway ... it was a tricky run today because half of it was on ice and snow with hardened footprints. Luckily, I never slipped, though I did throw my arms in the air once I told myself that my ankles were getting a workout by trying to keep me steady on a very uneven sidewalk. ;o)

Maybe the garmin was cashing in on comando points and giving you extra credits! 3 plus miles is a great run for you, and on ice!!!

From James W on Tue, Dec 18, 2007 at 12:37:09

Good job on the run today. Garmin relies on clear sight to a GPS satellite to provide accurate data. One possibility is that it was having a tough time acquiring satellite lock. Another thing you can do is do a hard reset on the device if there is any corruption, but this will lose all its history and configuration. Garmin's support website should have details on how to do a hard reset on the 201/301, it may be different than the 205/305.

My mileage is a guesstimate again because I went without the Garmin - but I think it's pretty accurate. I really didn't want to run on ice today, so I ran my trail route twice. It was actually pretty hard to start that second time out - partly because it's uphill again. But I'm glad that I did it. Besides that hard section, it was actually a great run. I'm now able to run without an iPod and survive (hee, hee).

The only thing that's been bugging me this evening is my left heel. About an hour after my run my it started aching to step on it. Hopefully it'll be gone tomorrow. BTW, we've had great weather so far this week - in the 40's and no wind!! I could really get used to running all winter in this weather!

Bottom of your heel or back of your heel? Do you do any stretching after you run?

From Lybi on Wed, Dec 19, 2007 at 13:03:29

Good run, Laura! You deserve a little warmth--may it continue! The pain in your heel worries me a little. Could be the start of plantar fasciatis, which is one of the the most common injuries among distance runners. Have you ever felt it first thing in the morning?

From laura on Wed, Dec 19, 2007 at 13:22:39

It was the bottom of my heel. And, no, it didn't hurt this morning. In fact, as soon as I got off it and we talked with our company while sitting on the couches (instead of cooking, cleaning, etc.) then it began to feel better. It was most likely due to a back alignment proble; at least that seems to be the source of a lot of my problems.

I chickened out on night running this evening and went on the elliptical instead. It was a good workout; it was harder on my legs than my cardio - but that's probably a good thing for cross-training. I also did stetching and push-ups when I got bored of the elliptical. The whole workout was about 45 minutes.

I missed the best opportunity to run while both girls were down for their first nap around 9:00 - not that I knew it at the time! But when I went at 1:30, it was cloudy and windy instead of sunny and calm. At least I got in my run before the snow started! ;o)

I took the garmin today and apparently it's doing better because it read my distance correctly. I tried something new today - I used the "alerts" to tell me when I was running slower than 12:30. Ha! After going uphill for a while, the poor alert was going off all the time as I was getting more and more pooped. My average pace was 11:37.

I have never used the alerts on my Garmin before. I ran a race this summer with Jon Allen and he and I were duking it out with a high school kid for the win. The high schooler had a Garmin on and his alerts were going off the entire 10k, it drove me crazy! I later became his cross country coach and never let him where his Garmin in a race the whole season. I thought it was a distraction. But if it helps you get up that hill better, without driving you nuts, than go for it.

Well, I only made it out 4 times this week which is a bummer - but on the positive side, they were all over 3 miles! I'm going to have to try to earn those Garmin commando points in a week or two, Brent, because as James (Monaflash) says, that alert thing can be down right irritating! It was back to cold today - good bye to the nice 40 degree highs that we've had this week. It was 27 when I went. I hope Santa gets me some warm running gear. ;o)

It's 3 days till Christmas and I still haven't sent out my Christmas cards. But I can't even send them because I haven't received them in the mail yet. It seems like every January, I tell myself that this year I'm not going to procrastinate taking family pictures ... and then ... October... November... December all fly by and I'm stuck with no professional pictues yet and the Christmas cards are late. Bummer.

This was a difficult run, for some reason. I got cramps in my back at the 2 mile mark, and then when that finally went away, I got a cramp in my left chest. Very odd. I think I actually grunted a couple times during the run. And guess what? I actually ran faster going gradually uphill, rather than downhill (the last mile). I kept trying to keep my pace up that last mile, since it's all gradual downhill and usually much easier. But I was tired today or something.

Well, we're here in Phoenix and I'm loving the flat terrain!!  My average pace was 10:46.  The third mile, I got a cramp in my back again but it didn't last very long.

Slow milesFast milesTotal Distance

Well, I'm not sure what happened to my morning run blog, so I'll just add it on to my race report.

I went running in the morning and got in 3.33 miles in this lovely flat terrain of Phoenix!  My average pace was 10:57, which is faster than in Colorado but slower than my Phx run on Saturday.  In the afternoon, Lybi convinced me to run a race that night (which is crazy for both of us - I had already run today and she was still hurting from her 12 miler on Saturday, but it sounded too run to be able to run together!!!)

We showed up an hour before the race and I registered (while Lybi ran "bandit" - shh! don't tell).  It was surprisingly cold for Phoenix, or at least my nerves made it feel cold.  The temperature was only 49, but we kept getting in the car to warm up.  Lybi recommended we jog around and do strides for a warm up, so I added .5 miles to my total distance.

When the race finally started, Lybi had the Garmin and she would check it for our pace periodically.  Our goal had been 10:00 for the 1st mile, and then 9:30 for the next 2.  I had the best pacer in the world!!!!  Lybi talked the ENTIRE way!  :)  She rattled on about running technique, how I was doing great, or goals that she had for the coming year.  I seriously don't know how she did it!  I love her!!!  The first mile was good; I could tell it was faster than usual, but it wasn't demanding too much up front.  The second mile felt harder (as it should), but Lybi kept talking and stayed 1 step ahead of me but still to the side - so I was always reaching to keep up with her.  During the third mile, Lybi had us pick up the pace and we tried to play "games" to keep me from winding down.  She would race ahead of me and I had to catch up and pass her, then she would pass me.  I was surprised I had any energy left to pass her.  My breathing was getting very heavy and a cramp in my back was hurting with each breath.  I kept wanting to swing me head and flail my arms (what a wimp, I know!).  When we finally turned for the home stretch (Lybi said it was about half a lap), we tried to pick up the pace again.  I couldn't keep it up for long and started slacking, but then I heard footsteps behind me and found more energy!  The last 50 yards, I heard some fast footsteps behind me, and as Lybi peeled off away from the course, I laid everything on the line so this person couldn't pass me.  I sprinted as fast as I could, but he had more momentum and passed me within 10 feet of the finish line.  Grrr.  And, it turns out, he was 67 years old.  Grrr.  Oh well, he got me to pick it up at the very end, so I can't begrudge him too much.  ;o)

Overall, it was a great race - I wish I could always race with Lybi!!!!  She kept me diverted and focused on giving more.  And my pace really showed her help:

mile 1 - 9:30

mile 2 - 9:46

mile 3 - 9:22

I don't think those numbers quite add up, so Lybi will have to put the accurate numbers.  But my official time was 28:50!!!!!!  We were trying to figure out how to compare that to my last 5K and I think it means that I would've been sub-30 for a 5K and shaved off 6 minutes from my last time of 36:37!!!!!!!!!!!!  Woohoo!!!!!  (I'll let Sasha correct the comparison, if I was wrong)

So, flat terrain, lower altitute, and a great sister made for a very fun race to ring in the new year!  HAPPY NEW YEAR, FRB!!!
